Bokashi One Mix - 2L Bag

The Bokashi One Mix will ensure your Bokashi One Bucket creates the ideal environment for anaerobic fermentation to take place, while controlling odours and deterring bugs.

It's made in Sydney by Bokashi Composting Australia using wheat bran, rice husks and naturally-occurring micro-organisms. It'll mean your home organic waste will become the perfect compost starter in your Bokashi One Bucket.

The best? We buy it in bulk and package it for you in recycled paper bags made in Sydney and coconut fibre rope made ethically in Sri Lanka. It can all be used again or the paper can be recycled, and the rope added to your compost.

  • What you can put in your Bokashi One Bucket: Almost literally all food waste. The only bits that should be avoided are large bones and excessive amounts of liquid. Think cooked and uncooked food, fruit (including citrus) and vegetables, prepared foods, cooked and uncooked meats and fish, dairy, eggs, bread, coffee grinds, tea bags, wilted flowers and tissues.

And make sure you've got a solution for it when you do need to empty though, as if you're relying on being able to deposit it in someone's else's bigger compost bin or a community one, some won't accept particular items in the compost, like meat. We're working on making this more accessible, and please get in touch with us if you've got ideas!

How to use it:  Place the plastic grate inside the bucket, knob up, and then start to pile your food waste on top of it, and sprinkling about a handful of Bokashi One Mix over every layer of waste. As a guide, use approximately 1 tablespoon of mix for every cup of waste, and use more Bokashi One Mix when you're adding high protein foods, like meat, fish, cheese and eggs.

Check that the lid is closed tightly at all times, and keep repeating this sequence until the Bucket is full. During this process liquid will accumulate at the bottom of the bucket as the waste breaks down, and it can be used for many ingenius solutions (more below).

You Bokashi process is working well if it has a subtle smell of pickles or cider vinegar, and for longer fermentation periods, there should be white cotton-like fungi growth on the surface with longer fermentation periods.

When it's full, you can either bury it, put it in your external compost bin or a community compost bin that accepts the types of food waste that you've added, or find a local solution on Sharewaste, an awesome app solution to locate people you can deposit your compost with.

If you want to bury it, you can create a Bokashi compost heap by burying the waste in a regular spot in your garden. Once it's completely broken down it can be uses as a zero waste rich top-soil.

Uses for the Bokashi Juice: Take care with the tap when extracting the juice, and don't unscrew more than 3/4 of a turn. You may have a little, or you may have a lot of Juice, but either way it's alive with micro-organisms so it makes a great fertiliser. Dilute it with water at a 100:1 ratio, or approximately 2 teaspoons of juice for every litre of water.

You can also pour the concentrated Bokashi juice directly into kitchen and bathroom drains, toilets and septic systems. It will help prevent algae build-up and control odour. It also contributes to cleaning upour waterways, as it's full of good bacteria which compete with the bad bacteria.
It's best to drain the Bokashi Juice twice weekly and use it immediately.
