Compatible with top or front loaders: to use in the laundry, simply add 5-6 whole shells to the cotton wash bag that comes provided and put in the washing machine with your load of washing, and you're done. You can also add your favourite essential oil to your bag for an ultimate fragrant clean - see our native Australian pure essential oil range from the Sunshine Coast Hinterland here.
Optimum temperatures: the saponins are released more effectively in warm water, and 40 degrees is ideal. Alternatively, if you use them in cold water, they may not activate as quickly as they will in warmer water, but you can soak them in hot water for 5 mins prior and it will soften the shells and activate them for the cold wash. See how easy they release their natural soap here.
Save water: What's more, because they leave no residue on the fabrics, they can be used without activating the rinse cycle, saving water. How good is that.
You can also leave the soapberries in your machine for the rinse cycle, as they won't leave any residue.
For stains and whites: Soapberries will clean your clothes of everyday dirt, but for tougher stains you will need to treat them prior to washing. They'll also clean your whites, but because they do not contain optical brighteners, they will not give the same appearance as a chemical-based detergent. You can add washing soda or lemon juice to your load if you want to whiten your clothes more.
Compost at the end of their life: The soapberries last about 4 -5 washes (or less in higher temperatures), and you'll be able to tell when the soapberries need to be replaced as they will have primarily dissolved.
